WOVOdat - Data on Volcanic Unrest
NRFI – National Research Foundation Investigatorship
Workshop on “Automatization and Standardization of Volcano Seismic Data Processing Workflows” 17 – 21 November 2025

Towards a Standardised Model of Volcano–Seismic Unrest: Integrating Advanced Monitoring Technologies, Analytical Methods, and Data Workflows

Workshop Rationale
Volcano-seismic monitoring plays a central role in detecting, understanding, and forecasting volcanic activity. However, despite decades of progress, observatories still face challenges in data standardisation, interoperability, and integration across multiple sensing systems. This workshop brings together researchers, observatory scientists, and data specialists from multiple countries to co-develop shared frameworks, workflows, and analytical standards that can support the Next-Generation Volcano Surveillance initiative under the NRFi project.

Workshop Objectives
  • Understand and evaluate recent technological and analytical advances in volcano–seismic monitoring (e.g., DAS, infrasound, machine learning, and imaging)
  • Share observatory practices in data handling, quality control, and unrest case studies
  • Co-develop a draft framework for standardised data workflows from detection to database (e.g., WOVOdat integration)
  • Identify key research and operational gaps in the current monitoring ecosystem
  • Define collaborative actions and deliverables for the NRFi project toward harmonised volcano-seismic models
Workshop Outline
  • The progressive structure: technology → application → data → analysis → integration → standardisation.
  • The interactive balance between talks, tutorials, discussions, and interactive game activities.
  • The collaborative goal: to align scientific, operational, and data management practices into a common, future-ready framework.

Important:
WOVOdat does not perform waveform processing online. Users must process their own MiniSEED files using tools such as VOISS-Net or VEQTOR, and upload the resulting detection, RSAM/SSAM, and feature extraction metadata in CSV format.
NRFI Workflow Overview and Download Templates
  • Step 1: Upload FDSN StationXML to register network, station, instrument, and component metadata.
  • Step 2: Upload MiniSEED waveform files and provide preconditioning details (filters, gaps, resampling, QC parameters).
  • Step 3: Upload processing outputs including detection catalogs, RSAM/SSAM time series, and feature extraction CSV files.
  • A final summary view allows users to confirm all submitted information before it is integrated into WOVOdat.
